A respected professional admitting a mistake, uncertainty or difficult period may appear more confident because they seem able to reveal imperfection without fearing that their entire identity will collapse.

It can also increase trust. Professional content often hides the messy middle, so specific vulnerability can make the person feel more real and believable.

But the effect depends on context. A vulnerable story that demonstrates reflection, judgment or growth is different from disclosure that asks the audience to regulate an active crisis.

There is also a status asymmetry: people who already have credibility can often reveal weakness more safely because the audience has other evidence of competence.

Vulnerability is not automatically good personal branding. It works when the disclosure adds understanding without becoming the only thing holding the audience’s attention.
