How do I know whether a social media trend is worth joining?

A social media trend is worth joining when it helps you say something you already needed to say.

In short
  1. 1.
Third, strategic fit: does the trend help with reach, relevance, education or conversion, or are you doing it…
  2. 2.
The strongest trend content usually uses a familiar format to deliver a distinctive point of view
  3. 3.
A trend should be a container for your idea, not a substitute for having one

Check three things. First, audience fit: are the people you care about actually participating in or paying attention to the trend? Second, brand fit: can you use the format without sounding like you borrowed someone else’s personality?

Third, strategic fit: does the trend help with reach, relevance, education or conversion, or are you doing it because everyone else is?

Speed matters too. Trends decay quickly. If approvals take two weeks, the moment may be gone by the time you publish.

The strongest trend content usually uses a familiar format to deliver a distinctive point of view. The weakest version copies the format, language and joke so closely that the brand disappears.

A trend should be a container for your idea, not a substitute for having one.
