Should I copy what my competitors are doing?

Obviously not.

In short
  1. 1.
You can go and learn from them, see what's there
  2. 2.
Because just because they're running something doesn't mean it's working for them
  3. 3.
    You never really know
  4. 4.
    And you're seeing the surface

You can go and learn from them, see what's there. But everything you see, you need to take as a hypothesis.

Because just because they're running something doesn't mean it's working for them. It might mean they're testing something. Or maybe they don't have any other channels, so they're just giving it one more shot.

You never really know. We just assume from the outside that when a competitor is doing X, they must have found something.

But not really. That's what a competitor would think about you too.

And you're seeing the surface. You can't see their margins, their churn, whether that campaign is profitable, or whether someone senior insisted on it and everyone else thinks it's a mistake.

So look, take notes, form a theory. Then test it yourself. Never copy.
