How do I know if a channel is actually profitable?

Same thing again. Tracking.

You need to know what that channel cost you, and what came back from it

You need to know what that channel cost you, and what came back from it. Not traffic. Not leads. Money.

Which means every channel needs to be tagged so you can trace it, and the trace has to go all the way to revenue, not stop at a signup.

Then compare what it cost against what it brought, and against your ceiling for what a customer can cost.

A channel that brings lots of cheap leads that never buy is not a profitable channel. It just looks like one on a dashboard.
