Can AI replace my marketing team?
A lot of people think it can. So let me start with what that would actually look like, then why it can't right now.
The version people imagine: AI writes the content, builds the ads, runs the campaigns, reads the data, and decides what to do next. One person and a subscription instead of five salaries.
What actually happens: you get the production, and you lose the judgement.
AI is extremely good at making things. It's not good at deciding what to make. Someone still has to know who you're for, what they care about, what's worked, what your positioning is, what's beneath you, when the data is lying.
That's the job. The making was always the smaller half.
And it can't tell you when something is wrong. It'll produce a competent version of a bad brief all day and never mention that the brief was bad.
It also can't build relationships. Partners, press, customers, the people who actually move your business. All still human.
Where it genuinely does replace headcount: the pure production roles. If someone's whole job was turning briefs into assets, that job changes a lot.
Where it doesn't: anyone whose job is deciding what should happen.
So the real answer is that AI shrinks the team, it doesn't remove it. And the person it definitely can't remove is the one who knows why.
