What do I do if I'm bored but well paid?
Efri · 1 min readBoredom is a real signal. People dismiss it because it sounds ungrateful, and then they lose three years to it.
But work out what kind of bored you are first.
- Bored because there's nothing to learn
- Bored because there are no stakes
- Bored because you're underused
Bored because there's nothing to learn. You've solved this job. That's real and it doesn't get better on its own.
Bored because there are no stakes. The work is fine, but nothing you do seems to matter. That's actually worse than being overworked and it's much harder to explain to anyone.
Bored because you're underused. You could do more, nobody's asking, and you've stopped offering.
The last one is fixable here, and it's the most common. Go and ask for something harder. A lot of people never do, then leave, and take a job that turns out identical because they never tested whether this one could change.
The other two, you leave. But leave properly. Well paid and bored is a good position to job hunt from. You've got time and you've got leverage. Use them instead of sitting there hoping it changes.
