If you have annual leave, use some of it and notice what happens when your nervous system is not dealing with the normal workweek. If taking meaningful time off is not possible, run a smaller test while you are still employed.
Ask yourself what you want to move toward, not only what you want to escape. Can you name a different kind of work, environment or problem that still interests you on a relatively good week?
Spend a few hours doing something adjacent to that career. Talk to people who actually do it. Take a short project, class or volunteer assignment and see whether the interest survives contact with the work itself.
Burnout often sounds like, “I need everything to stop.” A career shift usually has more direction: “I keep being pulled toward this other kind of work even when I am rested enough to think.”
You do not need perfect certainty. You need enough evidence to distinguish exhaustion from attraction before making an expensive permanent move.
