How do I get a job with no experience in the field?

Do the work before you're paid to do it. There's no way around that.

Nobody's going to hire you on potential in a competitive market. They'll hire you on evidence, and evidence doesn't have to come from employment.

The process
5 steps
  1. 01
    Build something real
  2. 02
Get one paid thing, however small
  3. 03
    Find the adjacent door
  4. 04
    Use what you already have
  5. 05
    Go where they're desperate

Build something real. A project, a small client, your own thing. It doesn't matter that it was unpaid. It matters that it happened and you can talk about what you decided and why.

Get one paid thing, however small. The gap between free and paid is the credibility gap. One small paid project changes how you talk about yourself.

Find the adjacent door. Most fields have a role that's easier to get into and one step from where you want to be. Support into product. Sales into marketing. Coordinator into manager. Get inside, then move.

Use what you already have. You're not experience-free. You're experience-different. Whatever you did before contains something the new field needs, and your job is to identify it and lead with it.

Go where they're desperate. Smaller companies, newer companies, less obvious cities. They hire on capability because they can't compete for the people with perfect CVs.
