What skills should I learn right now to stay relevant?
Efri · 1 min readAnything thinking. That's the short answer.
Judgement. Knowing which problem is worth solving. This is the most valuable and least teachable thing, and it's built by making decisions and living with them.
Taste. Being able to tell good work from adequate work. When production is free, the only scarce thing is knowing what's actually good.
Guiding the tools. Not "prompt engineering" as a skill in itself. Being able to specify what you want precisely enough that a tool can deliver it. That's just clear thinking with a keyboard attached.
Explaining things. Writing and speaking. Every field is full of competent people who can't make anyone understand what they did.
Understanding money. How your organisation makes it and how your work connects to it. People who can draw that line survive restructures.
Selling. Whatever your job is. Selling an idea, a plan, yourself.
Actually knowing one thing deeply. Real expertise in something specific. Generalists who can direct AI are useful. Generalists with no depth are the easiest people to replace.
Notice none of those are tools. Tools change every eighteen months. The list above hasn't changed in decades.
