How do I stop procrastinating?
Efri · 1 min readProcrastination is difficult because you treat it as a time-management problem. It is not. It is emotional avoidance. You are not avoiding the task. You are avoiding the feeling the task gives you. Boredom. Anxiety. Fear of failure.
- 01You believe you need more discipline
- 02You do anything else
- 03Stop asking "How do I get motivated?"
- 04You do not have to feel good to start
Fear of judgment. The task is just the trigger.
Why that is
You believe you need more discipline. Better tools. A new planner. That is false. The problem is not your schedule. It is your emotions. You put off the thing because doing it makes you uncomfortable. So you scroll. You clean.
You do anything else. The relief is temporary. The guilt is not.
The mindset shift
Stop asking "How do I get motivated?" Start asking "What am I avoiding feeling?" Name the emotion. "I am avoiding this because I am afraid I will do it badly." Or "I am avoiding this because it is boring." Once you name it, it loses power.
You do not have to feel good to start. You just have to start. Action comes first. Feelings follow.
What to do next
Break the task into the smallest possible step. Not "write the report." "Open the document." Not "clean the house." "Pick up one thing." Set a timer for five minutes. You can do anything for five minutes. Remove friction.
Put your phone in another room. Close the extra tabs. Have everything ready. Start before you feel ready. The first two minutes are the hardest. After that, momentum takes over.
How to maintain it
Forgive yourself when you slip. Do not spiral. "I procrastinated. That is normal. I will start now." Schedule your most important task first. Do it before you check email or social media. Protect that time. Review your triggers.
What set you off? Fatigue? Fear? Perfectionism? Adjust. Make the task easier. Make the reward closer. Keep going. That is how you stop procrastinating.
