How do I perform well under pressure?

Pressure is difficult because you try to rise to the occasion in the moment. You think you will find the words, the calm, the clarity when it counts. You will not. Pressure narrows attention. It floods your system.

Your brain goes to the loudest thing, not the most important thing

Your brain goes to the loudest thing, not the most important thing. So you freeze. You rush. You forget what you rehearsed. Then you blame yourself for choking.

Why that is

You believe performing under pressure is about mental toughness. About wanting it badly enough. That is false. Performance under pressure is about preparation. The reason you crumble is not weak character.

It is that you are trying to make too many decisions in a moment when your thinking brain is offline. The fewer decisions you need to make, the better you perform.

The mindset shift

Stop trying to be calm. Stop trying to feel ready. Instead, reduce the number of things you need to think about in the moment. Pressure narrows attention. So preparation should shrink the field. The goal is not to feel confident.

The goal is to have so few moving parts that you can execute even while your hands shake.

What to do next

Practice under conditions that resemble the real thing. Not just reading it. Saying it out loud. Standing up. Timer on. In front of one person. Then two. Rehearse the first 30 seconds until it is automatic.

That is the part where pressure hits hardest. Prepare a reset. One breath. One phrase. "I know this." Write down the three things that must go right. Ignore everything else. Have a fallback. If you blank, what do you say?

"Let me come back to that." That saves you.

How to maintain it

Review after every high-pressure moment. What went well? What threw you off? What would you prepare differently next time? Build a checklist for each recurring situation: a pitch, a negotiation, a difficult conversation. Follow it.

The checklist does the thinking so you do not have to. And expose yourself to pressure regularly. The more reps you get, the less novel it feels. Not because you stop feeling it. Because you have been there before.
